Taken froman Instagram post Ryan posted; he has been recording this time round with guitarist Tod Wisenbaker, drummer Aaron Ficca, bassist/engineer Charlie Stavish and keyboardist T’Ben “Mahoney” Alleman in March 2018---the 11 or 17 songs we refer to as L.A. RAIN). A few songs were also recorded that ended up on BC & Wednesdays-- Tod and Stavish are playing with Aaron. Those include "Birmingham" (it's rumored Jason Isbell ironically played on this*), "Middle of the Line", "I Surrender", "Manchester", "Red and Orange Special", "Like a Heatwave"---as well as the takes for "When You Cross Over" and "So Quiet, It's Loud". Another song posted on 26 April 2018 was the unreleased track, "Running Out of Time."
"Anybody Evil"; "Opposite of Love"; "When She Smiles" and "Take the Money" are from the July 2018 Electric Lady sessions with Johnny T. on drums. "Baby I Love You" was recorded during sessions for the Prisoner albums.
In the summer of 2022, several tracks were released as part of the double album, Romeo & Juliet and its follow-up, FM. "Sword and Stone" was the title track of an album released in 2024. "Mercy" was released on Heatwave, as well.
In 2025, "Take the Money" and two more tracks believed to be from around the Big Colors sessions were released on Self Portrait.
*Jason Isbell is mentioned alongside Emmylou Harris and Benmont Tench as guests appearing on the original mix of WEDNESDAYS (according to the initial promotional 2019 info). The rumor that originally "Birmingham" featured a (later deleted) part by Isbell has been suggested on reddit.

This compilation started with the eighteen songs that were believed to be recorded initially with Cameron Crowe's film soundtrack in mind---as well as the Cardinals' follow-up to Jacksonville City Nights. Some were unfinished sounding and Ryan probably would have done more to them like "Willows", "Clementine", and "Elizabethtown" (though that song in particular he reportedly hated).
Some songs were late re-done with The Cardinals during the sessions for what became Easy Tiger (andIII/IV)---like "Two", "Two Hearts", "Everybody Knows" and "The Sewers at the Bottom of the Wishing Well". "Saturday Night" ,"Dreams of the Working Class" and "Clementine" are re-worked songs originally written during the 2000-01 era (albeit, with new lyrics)."Lighthouses" was later re-worked into "Rip Off" (why people heard that song was part of this session---it sort of was).
Ryan with producer (and subsequent Cardinals keyboardist) Jamie Candiloro, first redid "Lighthouses" (with some added 'optimistic' lyrics) in a sort of similar arrangement to "Two"---though it doesn't have the same vibe as the original. Ryan sort of 'disavowed' the depressing lyrics in the post 2006 articles RE: Darkbreaker. He initially said 'War and Peace' would be about "cleaning up his act". After scrapping the Elizabethtown soundtrack idea (one song was used, "Words") and the War and Peace solo double album was rejected---the band (now with Neal Casal added to the mix), would record more collections of songs (i.e. reference discs...CANDY a.k.a. Cardinals III / Ratt Classics I and II / Color Bars) to be rejected by Lost Highway until he tried doing a 'back to basics' album---accompanied by the band and the most commercially viable songs with the 'unrepentant but I'm also in recovery vibe' PR schemes...and voila, Easy Tiger.
Ryan also overdubbed more and re-did vocals for "Cemetery Hill", "Who Were We?", and "Maps"---as well as reworking "Lions of Broadway" into "Steve Miller & Weed" during the early 2006 sessions for his rejected 'War & Peace' double album---which in itself was joined by The Cardinals into making their next double album (III/IV)---which would be rejected and eventually become other (mostly rejected) projects.
"Two", "Everybody Knows", "Who Were We?" and "Jessica" (now known as"Destroy Yourself"---yes, he changed the lyrics again for the 2008 demo of the same name on his blog) were part of the proposed track list for CANDY (Cardinals III) in 2006. Ryan mentioned in a 2006 article from around this time that the band had 16 songs ('half are good---half aren't good enough'---to paraphrase). He also mentioned Blackhole and War & Peace, as well.
As we know, the former album would be revised and teased for a release in 2010----only to go through more revisions before being released in an inferior version (mix, mastering, songs, etc.) in late 2024. The latter project would yield the Sad DRAcula digital albums and Ryan's ORION side-project with producer Jamie Candiloro. Ryan also recorded with the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh, as well, during the 2006 year. The Cardinals would lose guitarist J.P. Bowersock and bassist Catherine Popper---replacing them with the late singer-guitarist Neal Casal and Santigold's Chris Feinstein, respectively---before finishing Ryan's Easy Tiger album in early 2007. You know the rest...and it's all history, I guess.
It's been said that several tracks were recorded in 2006 by Ryan with the 20/20 box set in mind (to replace the Gold tracks and superfluous versions like "Off Broadway", "Two", "Elizabeth", and "Hard Way to Fall", for example). Thus, the songs we haven't heard (before 2007--anyway) being on the 'official' versions of 48 Hours ("24/7", "Listen to the Radio", "Black Myrtle"), Commercial Suicide ("Lonely is As Lonely Does"), Darkbreaker, and the infamous Saturday Night Feverblister tracks ("Game Over", "On Fire", "Free Dreams", "Actors on Actors", "Sweet Dreams", "A Wish") with the Pinkhearts album (basically the same thing---Litt tried to produce a new improved version of that album and we at least got "Suspicion").
I added "Movie Stars Hurt" and "Destroy Yourself" cos I felt they fit the vibe. The electric 12-string overdub on the latter (probably Graboff---like elsewhere on III/IV) leads me to believe it was done with (part of) the band and Jamie C after the Elizabethtown Sessions.
The former was originally called "Movie Star Girl" with slightly different lyrics---it was another song from the 2001 live era like "Saturday Night", "Dreams of the Working Class" and "Clementine". I left off "Destroyers" , "Steve Miller & Weed", and "Sewers at the Bottom of the Wishing Well" since they've been officially released.
The original "Lions of Broadway" and "Maps" sounded too raw for repeated listens with the existing mixes to work with. The 2006 version of "Lighthouses" doesn't have the same vibe as the original 2005 version---however, he improved "Maps" (which was retitled "Take 'Em to the Stars and Back" ---then later "Star Maps" for the as-of-yet unheard version from the 2018 sessions at ELS). "Everyone Knows" is interesting---but you can tell it's not done. I'd love to hear the version they did for III/IV, but it's not circulating. I'd imagine it's probably like this version of "Two" in being better than its Easy Tiger counterpart.
Songs 1-10 reportedly recorded solo at Sunset Sound (same room as GOLD) with Tom Schick, fall 2005 / 2nd session at ELS with Jamie Candiloro and The Cardinals + string section / Additional recording in spring 2006 for War and Peace sessions./ Unreleased except "Words" (soundtrack album in 2006); "Destroy Yourself" (posted as part of the Sad DRAcula digital albums released in late 2006) and "Dreams of the Working Class" (2023 digital single).

Collection of live recordings from 2001-02 bootlegged and easily found online. These songs were a darker collection of bluesy psychedelic style jams. No studio versions of any of these songs have leaked. "Diamonds or Hearts" is a re-write of the bootlegged Gold outtake "Fool's Gold" (and was also re-recorded in 2005 during the Jacksonville City Nights sessions). "Vampire" was subsequently recorded during the Love is Hell sessions. "Soundtrack of Your Life" was later recorded with new lyrics as "Luxury" during the Rock N' Roll album sessions. Eight songs clocking in around 37 minutes. As close as it gets to Ryan's vision to TV host Charlie Rose about "finding a connection between deep, spiritual R&B and psychedelic rock music." A lot of material to go through...sound quality and finding a good flow is key. A lot of the songs from this period were just extended jams. It's not unimaginable Ryan's ambitions exceeded the quality of material. Here's some more background:
After completing a tour promoting his major-label debut, Gold, Ryan Adams was showing no signs of slowing down. After having completed two more albums: the twangy country-rock 48 Hours and (the debut of his Nashville based band, The Pinkhearts) Let It B-Minus--a disc of Replacements-meets-Pixies style rock wrapped in Stones nostalgia--Adams was back in the studio in Nashville with legendary producer Scott Litt to record the follow-up to Gold with his touring band, The Sweetheart Revolution. It's unknown exactly which 9 songs were recorded (besides the 10-song reference disc that exists) because the sessions were scrapped. Ryan and the band finished up work on the Pinkhearts CD --though some of the tracks were supposed to be included as bonus material part of the never released 20/20 box set rumored in 2007. It's been said RA re-recorded the material on his own after a fan mentioned 'wanting to hear what it sounded like' on social media.
After scrapping the sessions with Scott Litt, Ryan Adams would go on to record his next project, Love is Hell. This begins another really interesting period of creativity and unreleased albums with Adams ultimately at loggerheads with his label, Lost Highway. I will cover this next chapter in future posts....Cheers!
9 songs by The Instant Lovelies' backing group led by guitarist Jonathan Vonn. Taken from the LUCY DAWN songbook---arranged by the band in their own eclectic style.
The album was delayed earlier in the year after the withdrawal of the single release of the album's planned title cut---which labelmate (and executive producer) Smash Addams 're-purposed' for his own Further Listening album (along with another song intended for the original album). Following some last minute 'what-have-you's, a completed nine song disc was belatedly turned in---and NOW we bring you...
