---Side 4
Pacific Line*    [DRA 2021 IG post]

The long awaited final installment of the projected 2019 trilogy with the original Big Colors and Wednesdays albums. As we know, history did not unfold as it originally was intended to be by the music's author. Both aforementioned albums were belatedly release in opposite order (December 2020 and July 2021, respectively) with different artwork and tracklists. The original CHRIS album has been described by RA as 'Cold Roses style tunes his late brother, Chris, loved'---also as 'inauthentic' or something similar to paraphrase--as justification for scrapping the planned 18-song double LP and 're-doing it'. The end result is suspiciously sounding like the previously 'aborted' Prisoner 2/3 double LP that RA teased in 2018 (in the same paragraph promising the finished version of  Blackhole; as well as a couple live albums-- Live at The Capitol Theatre with The Stringdusters and Exile on Meryl Streep)

Most of those songs indeed can be traced back to the eighty or so songs reportedly recorded from the 2014-16 sessions for PrisonerHowever, we have enough songs from the July 2018 session to make an album that clocks in around 67 minutes---plus, the 17-minute "Pacific Line" (from the April 2019 session with The Wolf Bros.) taking up a whole side on the second LP, like Dylan's Blonde on Blonde.

Songs mostly taken from Romeo & Juliet and Sword and Stone; "Nightmare", and "Pacific Line" have been streamed on RA's IG stream 2021-23. The latter is easily found on YouTube.

BELOW IS A SPOTIFY PLAYLIST
(it's missing the *imported* tracks that are not streaming; Several tunes (2018 ELS) have since been identified as outtakes from Wednesdays---so I've moved them to my own mix of that album) "Throw It Away" has been added from Self Portrait (2025).

Alternate mix
"Valentine" is not streaming anywhere at this time.
You could add "Nuclear War" in its place.

RYAN ADAMS, 'L.A. Rain Music' [re-imagined LP]

RYAN ADAMS

L.A. Rain Music  (2022)

  1. I WANT YOU     [FM]
  2. SWORD AND STONE     [Sword and Stone]
  3. HALL OF SHAME    [FM]
  4. ANYBODY EVIL+   [Big Colors bonus 7-inch]
  5. OPPOSITE OF LOVE+   [Big Colors bonus 7-inch]
  6. RAIN IN L.A.    [Romeo & Juliet]
  7. WILD AND HOPELESS   [FM]
  8. BABY I LOVE YOU+    [non-LP digital single]
  9. SO DUMB+   [FM]
  10. FAIRWEATHER    [FM]
  11. WHEN SHE SMILES+   [FM]
  12. SOMEDAY   [FM]
  13. TAKE THE MONEY+   [Self Portrait]
  14. RUNNING OUT OF TIME*
-----
Taken from an Instagram post Ryan posted; he has been recording this time round with guitarist Tod Wisenbaker, drummer Aaron Ficca, bassist/engineer Charlie Stavish and keyboardist T’Ben “Mahoney” Alleman in March 2018---the 11 or 17 songs we refer to as L.A. RAIN). A few songs were also recorded that ended up on BC & Wednesdays-- Tod and Stavish are playing with Aaron. Those include "Birmingham" (it's rumored Jason Isbell ironically played on this*), "Middle of the Line", "I Surrender", "Manchester", "Red and Orange Special", "Like a Heatwave"---as well as the takes for "When You Cross Over" and "So Quiet, It's Loud". Another song posted on 26 April 2018 was the unreleased track, "Running Out of Time."

"Anybody Evil"; "Opposite of Love"; "When She Smiles" and "Take the Money" are from the July 2018 Electric Lady sessions with Johnny T. on drums. "Baby I Love You" was recorded during sessions for the Prisoner albums.

In the summer of 2022, several tracks were released as part of the double album, Romeo & Juliet and its follow-up, FM. "Sword and Stone" was the title track of an album released in 2024. "Mercy" was released on Heatwave, as well.

In 2025, "Take the Money" and two more tracks believed to be from around the Big Colors sessions were released on Self Portrait.

*Jason Isbell is mentioned alongside Emmylou Harris and Benmont Tench as guests appearing on the original mix of  WEDNESDAYS (according to the initial promotional 2019 info). The rumor that originally "Birmingham" featured a (later deleted) part by Isbell has been suggested on reddit.

-----------------
RA recorded several new tracks following his stepping back from old habits and beginning work on a proposed 10-track album (' with a "Thank You Louise" similar production style') in July 2022. New tracks include "At Home with the Animals", "Desperate Times", "Free Yourself", "Amethyst", "Theo is Dreaming", "What is Left", "Bye Bye Balloons", "Lovers Under the Moon", "Something's Missing" and "Romeo and Juliet" (source from RA's IG postings from the time). Most of these songs were compiled with studio outtakes and released as the 2022 double album, Romeo & Juliet

I have restored those other songs to their respective albums. I replaced them with songs from the 2024-25 albums---making my own Demolition style mix---much like Ryan himself has continued to do since he began releasing albums again in 2022. Curating them with purposely different song titles and no credits to obscure who played on them and when---most likely to avoid royalties. Just ask Tod W.

Ryan also posted a series of short song ideas in 2021 (referred to as the 'Diary Songs')--- including "Stormy Weather", "Try Again Tomorrow" and "My Life Before the War"---among others---the latter which would be subsequently posted as the Jan 2023 demo, "Brighter Than Heaven" (a.k.a. "Shut the Fuck Up"); streaming on RA's Instagram. I've included some of them here---and saved the rest for my own alternate mix of Self PortraitRA also live-streamed an attempted re-recording of songs from Gold in Sept. 2021 with a drummer friend (Matt Tecu) in a more raw stripped-down style---that subsequently devolved into a long jam session (before taking a 'break' from streaming on 23 September).

Ryan also home recorded an album of several new songs composed as a 'side-writing' experiment to respond to songs from his first album, Heartbreaker. These would include "Too Old to Die Young", "I Am a Rollercoaster", "Counting to Zero", "Saturday Night Forever", "I Can't Remember"; among others---with drum machine accompaniment and confessional lyrics reflecting his older outlook on them compared to then.

Compilation I made for my OWN personal use from the 2024 albums and Self PortraitYou can access these on GraciousFew's YouTube page. All albums are streaming!

  • 1986 (a.k.a. "Trapped in the New World")
  • Alanis
  • Soundtrack of Your Life

  • Sunday, Wish You Were Here
  • Rocket Man (Take 2, live) +   [Taken from CMT Crossroads ep. with Elton John]
All songs unreleased except "Rocket Man" (added as a bonus track).
------------

Collection of live recordings from 2001-02 bootlegged and easily found online. These songs were a darker collection of bluesy psychedelic style jams. No studio versions of any of these songs have leaked. "Diamonds or Hearts" is a re-write of the bootlegged Gold outtake "Fool's Gold" (and was also re-recorded in 2005 during the Jacksonville City Nights sessions). "Vampire" was subsequently recorded during the Love is Hell sessions. "Soundtrack of Your Life" was later recorded with new lyrics as "Luxury" during the Rock N' Roll album sessions. Eight songs clocking in around 37 minutes. As close as it gets to Ryan's vision to TV host Charlie Rose about "finding a connection between deep, spiritual R&B and psychedelic rock music." A lot of material to go through...sound quality and finding a good flow is key. A lot of the songs from this period were just extended jams. It's not unimaginable Ryan's ambitions exceeded the quality of material. Here's some more background:

After completing a tour promoting his major-label debut, Gold, Ryan Adams was showing no signs of slowing down. After having completed two more albums: the twangy country-rock 48 Hours and (the debut of his Nashville based band, The Pinkhearts) Let It B-Minus--a disc of Replacements-meets-Pixies style rock wrapped in Stones nostalgia--Adams was back in the studio in Nashville with legendary producer Scott Litt to record the follow-up to Gold with his touring band, The Sweetheart Revolution. It's unknown exactly which 9 songs were recorded (besides the 10-song reference disc that exists) because the sessions were scrapped. Ryan and the band finished up work on the Pinkhearts CD --though some of the tracks were supposed to be included as bonus material part of the never released 20/20 box set rumored in 2007. It's been said RA re-recorded the material on his own after a fan mentioned 'wanting to hear what it sounded like' on social media.

After scrapping the sessions with Scott Litt, Ryan Adams would go on to record his next project, Love is Hell. This begins another really interesting period of creativity and unreleased albums with Adams ultimately at loggerheads with his label, Lost Highway. I will cover this next chapter in future posts....Cheers!
